Report

A seven-goal game between two teams eying important points sees the USA keep their hopes of moving on from the group stage alive, as the Americans scored two in the first, second and third periods and controlled the game against the team in blue and yellow from start to finish. Sweden failed to capitalise on a number of powerplays while the winning team proved clinical when given the chance.

The game started cautiously, with the USA still feeling a bit weary following their 7-2 loss to Czechia last night, but it would be them who got the opening goal of the game when JJ Monteiro was able to skate round the net and tuck the puck in to make it 1-0 while his team were playing shorthanded.

The Swedes retaliated some seven minutes later to tie the game 1-1 but the USA’s Idan Park scored a nice breakaway goal half a minute before the first intermission to put his team back in the lead.

The second period saw Sweden throw away powerplay after powerplay, while the team in the lead added two more goals to their ever-extending margin, as Chase Stefanek and William Felicio got their names on the board at the 23:21 and 38:55 marks respectively.

Sweden had to open up their game in the final frame but, as was the case throughout the entire game for them, they were unable to get anything past goalie Heil. The USA added two more on breakaways as Chase Stefanek scored his second of the game to finalise the score at 6-1.

Three points equally for the USA, Sweden and Czechia makes the Břeclav group a very close one, and with Germany still in contention, there are no clear favourites as of now.

Reactions

Luke Strand (USA): We played a connected game. The pieces we were missing in yesterday's game, we found on day 2. The guys displayed a very good competitive nature about themselves. Today, we played a better team game. I believe that getting on the scoreboard makes you play a little bit differently, and our guys did a pretty good job with that. We managed to kill off some of these penalties early in the game. Tomorrow se need to be even better.
Johan Serén (Sweden): A lot rougher day than tomorrow. We didn't get up to our standards from the start, we were too slow. We played into their game plan and we couldn't get out of it. We need to play more simply, we overplayed some situations today. It's going to be complicated to get to the semis but tomorrow is a new game tomorrow.
