Report
A six-goal second period was the cherry on top of a great second day of Hlinka Gretzky Cup action in Břeclav. The 6-2 result sees Czechia pick up a second win in a row and go top of Group A, while Germany is out of contention for the semi-finals.
It took a long 17 minutes for the first goal of the game to come, and it went to the Czechs as Šimon Pohludka read the opposition perfectly and managed to get onto a breakaway that saw him go face to face with goalie Elagin and send him the wrong way to fire the puck in.
The home team went on to score four in the middle frame, going up 4-0 at one point, while their counterparts from neighbouring Germany scored two themselves, albeit not doing enough to change the tide of the game in their favour.
Germany upped the pressure in the final frame but was caught out one too many times to mount any serious pressure. Adam Benák added goal #6 for Czechia on a 5-on-3 powerplay to finalise the score at 6-2 and seal a back-to-back victory for his team.
Czechia will face second-placed Sweden tomorrow at 19:00 CEST and could seal safe passage to the semi-finals with a win, while Germany will face the USA at 15:30 CEST tomorrow.
Reactions
David Čermák (Czechia): It was a tough game after yesterday's game. We wanted to start the game better to make it easier for ourselves, but we didn't succeed. After the first period, we were leading only 1:0 and the Germans felt a chance, we made it too difficult for ourselves.
Tobias Abstreiter (Germany): I believe we had a stronger start today compared to yesterday. During the first period, we made better decisions. However, in the second period, we faced a few challenging minutes where the Czechs dominated us. Fortunately, we managed to regain our composure and stop their momentum. In the third period, we showed significant improvement in our gameplay. We must continue this positive momentum into tomorrow's game.
