The 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup is approaching. This year will be the 26th edition of the prestigious annual summer tournament. From August 8th to 13, fans in Břeclav and Bratislava can look forward to seeing some of the greatest U18 hockey players in the world.
The traditional eight best U18 national teams in the world are once again divided into two groups:
Group A, Břeclav: Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, USA.
Group B, Bratislava: Slovakia, Canada, Sweden, Russia.
Tournament format
The tournament is open to players 1999 and younger. The maximum number of players per team is 22 – 20 skaters and 2 goaltenders. All players must also receive entry visas into the Czech and Slovak Republics.
Statistics will be kept by the Czech and Slovak ice hockey associations. The tournament will be officiated by qualified referees and linesmen with international licenses.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the medal round. Teams finishing third and fourth place in each group will play a final placement game.
A win in regulation time in the group stage counts for 3 points, with the loser recording 0 points. If the game is not decided in regulation time, both teams receive 1 point, followed by a five-minute 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime period. If no goal is scored, it will be followed by a shootout, with three shooters per side. The winner in overtime or a shootout receives an extra point. The same tie-breaking rules apply in the medal round with one difference - there will be ten minutes of 4 on 4 overtime.
